Happy Spring!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Added another photo to the Friends slideshow page. He's Teddy and a Shih Tzu-Poodle mix puppy from the Seattle area.

Updated our links page with some websites or web pages that have information on plants and foods that are toxic to our pets. Click on the Animal Healthcare quick link at the top of the Links page.

This information is important to know because many of us do not realize what these plants and foods are that could cause illness or even death to our pets. You cannot assume, for example, that just because humans can eat onions so can our dogs. No!

So, take a look at the lists and print out one of them to tack on your fridge or take with you when you go shopping for plants this spring to put in your house or garden. You may also want to look in your yard and remove any plants that are on the list.

Belated happy new year!

I last wrote about the news that shelters in the state of California held a glut of Chihuahua dogs. Since the story broke in news on TV and print last month, at least two rescue groups/ shelters have taken in the dogs in Colorado and New York.

That is sooo good to hear. While I'm not particularly a big fan of Chihuahuas -- they're pretty cute though -- it's nice to see that those teacup dogs will be able to find new, good homes.

December 10, 2009 (PST)

Too many chihuahuas! The poor little dogs are being abandoned to California shelters like crazy, eclipsing the population of abandoned or stray pit bulls and pit bull mixes in those shelters. Read the details at YahooNews (link may be time-limited).

With heavy hearts and lots of tears, I am so sad to say that we lost our sweet little Suzi on Monday, November 30th. It was a short 18 months that we got to have her in our lives.

We wish our time together was much, much longer. We had so much to look forward to...

Our guestbook and the contact page are now up and running again.

Surprise! JFP is now free of the bonds with Yahoo, sort of. Well, mostly. Our domain name is what I announced in September, but we're not hosted with Yahoo after all.

I was already paying a webhost for space and realized with the closing of Geocities that I could host more than one site on my paid account. Yipee!

So, here we are. Thankful for being here on the web.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

September 27, 2009

Good news! JFP will be staying with the Yahoo group for at least another five years. We will be losing the URL with the Geocities.com domain however. Our domain name will be janetspets.com permanently after October 26th. Yahoo will make the transition easy for visitors, though, even if you get to our site the old way. Thanks for visiting us!

July 14, 2009

Cats and dogs will have an airline of their own to travel by from now on. No cargo hold for them! Read the details at Yahoo!News (may be time-limited link)

July 10, 2009

Geocities finalized the close down date to October 26, 2009.

JFP will move to another web host or stay with Yahoo, since the promotional 1-year hosting price is better than what we have now.

In order to access this site, please use www.janetspets.com from now on.

When we move and if you use the old URLs, there will be a re-direct page here until they shut us down for good.

Our beloved cat, Tasha, passed away today. She was 19 years old.

December 18, 2008

Grr! If there's anything that makes this editor fume is hearing about animal abuse and eating of pet animals. Cultural or not, modern civilized people do not consume cats and dogs, nor pet rabbits, etc. This story coming out of China illustrates the point. So much for the goodwill they hoped to achieve with the Summer Olympics. I think stories like these negate any positives.(Yahoo! News story that may be time-limited.)

October 7, 2008 - Sights

A couple of weeks ago while driving back home I saw a woman jogging with one of those jogging strollers. You know, the kind you put a child into so you can exercise and take your kids with you. But instead of a child, this stroller held a full-grown collie!

July 15, 2008 - Dog Reunited With His Family After 5 Years

After escaping from the backyard, a pooch made his way back home five years later thanks to something tiny embedded in his back. Read the full story at the New York Post web site.

July 15, 2008 - Correction

Our newest dog, Suzi, is not a toy poodle. She is a miniature poodle. My confusion was based on her weight/ height vs. the standards for the toy and miniature versions. She seems to be an in-betweenie to me, though. We love her whatever she is.

May 20, 2008

Well, it turns out that the sweet little female Toy Poodle became a part of our family. Photos and story will be coming in the near months.

May 12, 2008 - Sweet Dog

In our search for a dog from rescue groups, I met this sweet, female Toy Poodle. She's a senior dog, eight years old, tiny and very friendly. I think she'd make a great family dog for someone in the San Francisco Bay Area. You can view her profile at ARF's Petfinder page.

It's been three weeks since Bo passed away and while we miss him so much, we've begun looking for another dog to fill the hole in our hearts.

Bo crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. Bo lived a long life: 17 years and almost three months. As the only dog in a four-cat household, he got along fine with all and mostly, they ignored him except for Sarah, who loved him very much. Bo is missed immensely by his mom and dad.

January 21, 2008

Happy birthday to Bo! Our little old dog is 17 years old today. That's about in his 90's if he was human, according to his vet.

Bo is almost totally blind from cataracts, hard of hearing and has arthritis. He's taking prednisone right now to see if that'll work better than the Rimadyl (tm) that he'd been taking for a couple of years now. We hope so.

But anyway, good wishes for him reaching a big milestone for dogs, especially for small dogs.

November 20, 2007

Did you know November is "Adopt a Senior Pet Month?" Well it is. If you've got the room, head on down to your nearest shelter and adopt an older pet. They are just as loving as a puppy, kitty or other baby animal and need your love, too. With the exception of Noel and Willie, our pets were a year old (Bo) or older when we got them.

November 14, 2007 - What Is Wrong With These People?!

How well you treat animals shows how well you treat humans. Apparently with some people in Puerto Rico, they care about neither. Read about the pet massacres done by taxpayer-supported animal control companies. (Time-sensitive article from Yahoo News)

And why does Japan need to hunt down whales? A rare white humpback whale may be in their gunsights. Scientific research, my foot. You don't need 1000 whales a year for research; the whales are for the marketplace and people's plates. Read the article from Telegraph.co.uk.(may be time sensitive).

They shoot wild horses in Australia, don't they? Why is it necessary, going back to the first article mentioned above, to resort to inhumane means to reduce animal populations? Read the article from Telegraph.co.uk (may be time sensitive).

As soon as I can get the photos, I will have two new dogs to show off. One dog, Colby, belongs to my sister whose female Shar Pei died earlier this year and the other dog, Alex, belongs to my parents.

I know we're late with this, but better late than never? This month is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. While almost all of our cats are not shelter cats, one of them definitely is: Smokey, and he has the tattoo to prove it.

Why are the Chinese killing thousands of dogs? Apparently an outbreak of rabies prompted the extermination of pet dogs as well as strays. Don't they have veterinarians? Don't they have rabies shots for dogs and cats? And isn't it mandatory? Are they still stuck in the 1950s?

Note: New York Times story link has disturbing picture.

March 23, 2006

All the cats and the dog are fine. No new additions, though I'm tempted every time I see stories of homeless pets on the news to get another one. But my city's animal control license forbids any more. Sometimes I wish we lived in the country.
